I am planning on deploying an "appliance" style of setup that includes Stereo Tool. I would like the Windows installation to be locked down, and the running user not be part of administrators group.

Will ST require being part of the administrators group to run, or install updates to? Or, can it run (preferably?) from a flash drive that requires very little interaction with registry / OS stuff?

Thanks in advance. Normally, I try before asking, but this answer predicates how I will (or won't) proceed.

Hi ohangelo,

Running Stereo Tool from a flash drive with NO registry/OS/harddisk interaction should be fairly easy to setup.

- The registry is ONLY accessed by the installer, which is also the only thing that requires administrator rights. But you don't really need the installer, just run it on any system and copy the installed .EXE or .DLL file and you can use it anywhere.

- Stereo Tool itself does not use the registry, it reads and writes an .INI file to the user profile directory - override environment variable USERPROFILE and you can let it do all the reading and writing on the flash drive. The name of the .INI file is based on the executable or DLL name (so if you have multiple copies, say stereo_tool_1.exe and stereo_tool_2.exe, you'll also get 2 different INI files).

Thanks... that makes perfect sense. The "user", even a non-administrative user, can still write to his/her profile directory, so that will always work.
