Can a feature be built, whereby the dynamic range of very dense material can be sensed before the final clipper and the clipping depth adjust itself accordingly? A couple of my clients use program material that is already "pre-squashed". Little-to-no additional clipping needs to be added to this mush. However, playing something less dense sounds better with some additional clipping. Adjusting for one doesn't necessarily work for the other. Setting for a normal range with the clipper automatically backing off is what I'm visualizing. |

Hm... The new compressor is attempting to do this. Adjusting how much the clipper clips would cause inconsistent peak levels - the whole goal of the clipper is normally to limit the peaks below a certain level. And not clipping already dense material would allow that material to have higher peak levels. If we clip those anyway (which wouldn't do much if the input level has been adjusted!) we avoid that. So, I don't really see what this would do. Please convince me otherwise if I'm overlooking something... |

Thanks, Hans. I've been thinking about how some much older processors appeared to look at this with the clipper being more of stand-alone function. I'll have another look at the compressors and see what I can do there. |

It's not clear what you actually want dense vs dynamic material. Do you want dense to also be more dynamic or just that both came out at same/similar loudness level? 1st one is problem that can never be fully solved. 2nd is, you don't want clipper to detect anything, it's job to clip and that's it. Proper preset already do what you want, balancing dense vs dynamic material at minimal loudness difference. On super dense material you just need to make sure that it's bearly touches clipper or less then that (threshold), and that's it. Proper preset will make dynamic material to go more into clipper (agc+mb). And since it's still not ideal, it's best way how you can do it in any processor. |
