My initial thought is maybe turn on the noise gate if not already and see how far you have to push the total noise level setting to clean up the distortion, then once the distortion diminishes perhaps back down the total level and instead tweak the per band settings to your desired level.
I have the solution for the cracking. If you set the stereo gain (see Picture 1) too high, unwanted noises (in this case the crackling) are radically amplified. Because I set the stereo phase difference remover in the Advanced Clipper, the crackling was heard in the middle. So if you don't want to have a radical crackling now, you should use and adjust the Stereo Strength Boost control with conscious.
